5 Steps for Emergency Preparedness

Are you prepared for an emergency?

The first step of emergency preparedness is to identify areas of risk. Risks may include wildfires, flooding, hurricanes, water contamination, etc... Based on your location, one risk could be more probable than another - or perhaps there is an additional risk, such as a manufacturing plant or other man-made risk.  Emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime, so it's important to prepare ahead of time. Here are 5 easy steps for emergency preparedness:

  1. Identify Risks & Form a Plan. Forming a plan ahead of time will enhance your ability to respond. Consider what you would do in the event of a certain risk and form a plan, knowing that based on real circumstances, it may need to pivot. Know where to meet other family members, discuss evacuation plans, and methods of communication.
  2. Prepare to be Self Sufficient. Every home should be equipped for 72hrs of self-sufficiency. This means having non-perishables on hand, as well as drinking water, medications, batteries, candles, blankets and a first aid kit. We also suggest a crank operated radio incase communication lines are down so that you can stay up to date on events.
  3. Record Important Details. If communication networks fail, you may be unable to log into your online accounts. Record bank account details (Institution and account numbers), insurance policy details, and important user names and passwords.
  4. Create a Home Inventory.  A home inventory can be as simple as a written list, photos of each of your rooms, or a video. This will assist you in making an insurance claim should you sustain damage to your home in an emergency event.
  5. Review your Insurance.  Make sure your insurance policy is up to date with a review with your Insurance Broker. Home policies include coverage for your home, its contents, and any personal outbuildings, but there are limitations for things like collections, bicycles, boats, or valuables. It's important to have adequate coverage to protect yourself against the financial hardship of rebuilding or replacing everything that you've worked hard to acquire.

Emergencies can happen in an instant - these are all steps you can take to prepare for an emergency before it happens to protect you and your family.

Insurance is not tangible - you can’t hold it, see it, or feel it. For this reason, it may be tempting to reduce coverage in order to save some money; but, insurance can be invaluable – especially if you’re on a fixed budget.

Backyard pools can be summer fun entertainment for the whole family – but they also come with very serious risk. An accident only takes a second, and often involves young children who gain access to a pool without a self-closing and self-latching gate. If you own a pool, we urge you to take the time to install safety measures.
