Wildfire Safety and Support

Jun 01, 2023

We are here for you. If you have been impacted by the wildfires in Nova Scotia, we are here for you. We are standing by to help those who have been displaced, or those who have lost their homes, businesses, or vehicles.

What's Covered

Fires are devastating - but insurance is here to help. Standard homeowner, tenant, and business insurance policies cover damage resulting from fire - wildfires included. If you have been displaced from your home due to an evacuation order from civic authority, you are eligible to claim expenses such as hotel or meals under the mass evacuation coverage, offered by most policies.

The Government of Nova Scotia has also announced that they are working with the Canadian Red Cross to offer one-time financial assistance of $500 per eligible household. *Households that have been ordered to leave their primary residence by emergency officials. When to Make a Claim

If you have been evacuated by civil authority, and need assistance for incurred expenses, we suggest opening a claim under Mass Evacuation. Mass Evacuation covers additional living expenses such as hotel and meals. Keep all of your expense receipts. Coverage is typically limited to 30 days, and a certain dollar value - this does vary by Insurer.  Some or our Insurer Partners have committed to protecting claims-free rating, and/or waiving deductibles, for claims made under this coverage, relating to the wildfires.

If you have experienced damage to your home, outbuildings, or personal property, we suggest starting a claim at your earliest opportunity. Once a claim has been opened, you can talk to your adjustor about replacing items needed immediately such as clothing or personal toiletries.

As Brokers, we will guide you through the claims process.

How to Make a Claim

To make a claim during business hours, please contact us directly. We will guide you through what to expect during the claims process.  If you are faced with an after-hours claim, we suggest contacting your insurance company using this directory; or, calling  1-855-HUEST01 (1-855-483-7801) for assistance.

Prepare for Evacuation

Wildfires move quickly. We suggest the following preparation:

  • Stay informed about weather and the situation at hand.
  • Create a home inventory. This can be as easy of taking a walk-through video of your home. Open drawers, closets, and describe what is in each room. Take photos on a device where you can access them from the cloud.
  • Collect valuables, medications, supplies, and important documentation if you are in close proximity to a wildfire. Be ready to leave in a moments notice.
  • Make a plan with neighbors to collect pets if they are home, and you are not, during an evacuation order. Have pet carriers, or leashes, by your door and ready to go.

Backyard pools can be summer fun entertainment for the whole family – but they also come with very serious risk. An accident only takes a second, and often involves young children who gain access to a pool without a self-closing and self-latching gate.
