Most Canadians celebrate Canada Day with BBQs, fireworks, boating and parades, and we are here for it! However you plan on celebrating, incorporate these 5 tips for safety so that the good times can keep rolling:
1. Celebrate responsibly and never drink before operating any motorized vehicles, boats, or bicycles.
Roadways and waterways are busy as folks take to the water or community events to kick off summer and celebrate the Canada Day Holiday. Designate a driver, and make sure you're at your final destination before celebrating with a drink.
2. Swap fireworks for Sparklers!
Fireworks can be disturbing to people and pets - consider using sparklers for a neighbor and pet-friendly alternative! If you're planning to celebrate with alcohol, you should not be handling fireworks or sparklers. If fireworks are a steadfast tradition:
- Set up outdoors in a clear, open space.
- Check the wind, weather, and fire restrictions in your area.
- Have water, sand, and a fire extinguisher nearby.
- Light only one firework item at a time.
- Wear protective eye glasses and ear protection. Light away from yourself (at an arm's length) and then stand back.
- Never lean over the fireworks and keep hair and clothes away from fire sources.
- Never attempt to re-light or defective firework.
- Never hold a lighted firework item in your hand.
Consider the safety and well-being of your pets (and your neighbors pets!) and keep them inside after dusk. Fireworks are disturbing to many animals and may cause your pet to bolt and run away, or become distressed.
3. Stay Cool and wear SPF. We're in the Maritimes - our summers are short and hot so we're not always accustomed to heat waves. Drink lots of water, and reapply sunscreen if you and your family are going to spend the day soaking up the rays.
4. Be a BBQ Grill-Master.
Before you light up your BBQ, make sure you inspect your unit and propane tank to ensure all connections are tight, clean, and in working order. We suggest using a wooden scrapper as opposed to a wire brush to clean your grill, as wires brushes have been known to cause food safety concerns.
Hand sanitizer is made of alcohol and is flammable - don't use it prior to grilling, use soap and water to wash your hands instead.
5. Practice Pool and Water Safety, if applicable.
If you're hitting the pool, or the water, remember to follow the appropriate safety measures. Children should wear PFDs and be supervised at all times. Alcohol and water don't mix - designate someone to be responsible for supervision and first aid. Check out more on
