Just when we thought we were settled back into our offices, many of us are returning to remote work from home, and missing the casual chats and daily structure that physically working in a shared office can offer. Working from home can be challenging, especially through a pandemic, and in the coldest months of the year, so, we've compiled some easy ways to improve your office space:
Research shows that people who get more exposure to daylight sleep better, are less stressed, and are more active during the day. Sunlight regulates key hormones and neurotransmitters, influencing our moods, stress levels, and immune systems. When possible choose a space near a window! If you don’t have access to much natural light in your space, use lamps to boost the brightness or consider a sunlight therapy lamp. Light therapy may increase your energy levels, and elevate your mood.
Working from home takes extraordinary discipline - there can be many distractions including online schooling, laundry, meal prep, etc... Schedule your work day including designated breaks and a consistent lunchtime away from your desk. At the end of your workday, "pack it up and put it away". Create boundaries between your work and your personal time by turning off your computer and closing your notebooks.
Forget the outdated belief that to maximize productivity you need to minimize distraction. Research shows that when we enrich our spaces with art, plants, and comforts, that we are 15 percent more productive. Hang up a photo that allows you to daydream for a moment, play nature sounds, and choose a special mug for your morning coffee. Just adding plants to your workspace has been shown to reduce stress and improve concentration.
Home offices, especially temporary ones, may lack ergonomic function. Ideally we should have our monitor or screen at eye level, and our keyboard and mouse meeting our hands when our arms are resting at a 90 degree angle. Creating an ergonomic space does not have to cost you - use blocks, stacks of books, or a seat cushion to find a comfortable and healthy position to work from. Stretching and taking breaks to move around or go for a walk are important in any workday, especially when you are working from a temporary home office, in a pandemic when we are house-bound.
Working at home, especially during a pandemic, can be very isolating. Communication with your team can be enhanced with video calls, group chats, or instant messaging. These channels should allow for structured team meetings and updates as well as unstructured meetings, which allows you to appropriately share conversation with your Team.
If you are struggling, reach out to a trusted friend or family member. Most workplaces offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which provides no-cost access to counselling services. Extended health benefits such as massage therapy or acupuncture may also be available depending on your benefit plan. You are not alone.
